Truly, what I love best about conservatives is their highly developed ability to speak out of both sides of their mouths. It's an impressive talent.
Case in point: Gov. Palin's pregnant 17 year old daughter. If Joe Biden's daughter or Hillary Clinton's daughter suddenly presented an unmarried pregnancy, I know that we would never hear the end of how evil and valueless these adult women are. The nerve of them, fornicating outside the sacred bonds of marriage! Yet another symbol of how Democrats and liberals bring Sodom and Gomorrah right here to our beloved United States, God bless it. Only people with no values would let their children stray into active sexuality. Clearly, they are not fit to lead the good people of this nation! In fact, it is likely God's wrath for the behavior of these harridans, these wanton sluts that sent Gustav to punish Americans for tolerating this slatternly behavior.
Instead, since it is their sweet evangelical governor/vice presidential candidate whose teen daughter indulged in extramarital sex, we get lectured for not minding our own business. After all, this is a family matter! Who cares if Gov. Palin supports abstinence for the rest of our children until they are married?!?! How dare anyone say anything about it!?!? Plus, as an alternate delegate told the New York Times, "Now she's a typical American family."
Boggles the mind. That said, I do feel bad for the kid. It's got to be pretty awful to have a nation discussing your unintended pregnancy.

You have absolutely nailed it.
ReplyDeleteThe FACT of the matter is that parents do not have (and dare I say, should not have) control over their children's sex lives (at a certain point, naturally - we are not talking about a 12 year-old here) - and that's why this abstinence-only crap is just that - crap. If your kid buys into it, that's great - abstinence does pretty much guarantee that you won't get knocked up/knock someone else up, and all that. And that end result is a good thing. But it's the LACK of REALITY-based education that is the problem with abstinence-only "education." It's the SHAME that is attached to sexual activity that is a problem. It's the inherent sexism (they'll say it applies to boys, too, but we all know that it really doesn't - um, no one is talking about the FATHER here) that is a problem. So, while a 17 year-old should be able to figure out that a CONDOM would be a GOOD IDEA, these kids may have been afraid to try and buy some. They may have been dealing with religious guilt about what they were doing. OR, they may have simply been caught-up in the moment - as many of us have been over the centuries, and ooooops, uh-oh.
So, yeah, I feel sorry for this young woman. Not only is she going to (possibly - she may have decided to keep the baby even if she weren't raised to believe abortion is a sin) be forced to have this baby, but she's going to be a teen bride on top of it - certainly to save face for her mother/family. Because, come on - whether she has the baby or not, most sane people know that teens marrying because of an unintended pregnancy rarely works out. But, I guess if your mom is running for VP, that's ok.... Hate to say it, but say goodbye to your life, Bristol.
Ah-men!
ReplyDeleteThe more we find out about Palin, the more I know that she wasn't properly vested, that John McCain made a hasty decision he believed would strike away from the historical element of Obama's campaign.
Did you see the video leaked today of the graduation speech she made in June where she tells the audience that the War in Iraq is a messianic mission and that by taking over the Middle East we will be doing God's will. She goes on to ask the audience to pray for a $30 billion national pipeline that her husband who works for BP would benefit from. Her pastor has made multiple statements that critics of President Bush's will go to hell.
Oh, and she used to be a member of that Independence party, the one that wants Alaska to be it's own country. You just know the Conservatives who are licking their lips to drill up there are just gonna love that.
The best part about this Bristol deal is that it just speaks volumes for the effectiveness of abstinence-only education.
Oh, I missed that gem. Is she some cuter version of Anne Coulter or is it just me?
ReplyDeleteI heard someone on NPR this morning, interviewed at the RNC, say "Well, yes, we do believe in preaching abstinence, but kids will be kids and what are you going to do?"
ReplyDeleteAnd then my head exploded.
i fully agree. palin's daughter is a great example of how abstinence-only education does not work. maybe someone should have taught her about condoms.
ReplyDeletealso, no one has mentioned the fact that mccain obviously picked her in a hurry after getting pressured. do we really need yet another president who can't think for himself and makes rash off the cuff decision. look where the last one of those got us? too bad the news media doesn't talk about how his choice for VP reflects on his decision-making capabilities.
Love the last comment by dr. p - and how exactly would you rate the choice of Biden?! The plagiarist who never could become President himself. I believe Obama made an extremely weak pick in choosing someone as "old school" and set in his views as Biden. Didn't I hear something about CHANGE in Obama's campaign?
ReplyDeleteCan't say I love Biden. He reminds me of a mattress salesman. I cringe every time he grins. That said, the man knows the Middle East better than any other pol out there. I'll be glad to have someone in office who doesn't think the war in Iraq is part of a holy war (*cough*Sarah Palin*cough*). I'll always take the knowledgeable (albeit sort of creepy) person over the religous nut who couldn't even graduate from one institution of higher learning in fewer than 6 years.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hear the youngsters are getting married, and the boy's dropping out of school. sigh.
ReplyDeleteSince I get all of my political news from reputable sources like Chelsea Handler and Jon Stewart, I would like to share with you this gem. I forgote which one of them mentioned it but apparently somebody found the baby-daddy's myspace page and his profile indicated that he didn't want children. Sucks for him:)
