As Dr. P and I whizzed down 95 through South Carolina at 80 miles per hour in her mini van loaded to the brink with her belongings, we passed a lump on the road. In the seconds I had to inspect it, I thought it might be an armadillo. It had a ribbed round body and a long snout. So it also could have been a muffler.
"Was that an armadillo or a muffler?" Dr. P asked.
"I was just wandering the same thing," I replied. "Are there armadillos in South Carolina?"
"I don't know. Do armadillos have long snouts?" she reponded.
"I think so, sort of like anteaters."
Yes, this is the kind of excitement we have had on the trip. We also discussed shitting in public bathrooms versus holding it in all day and the difficulties of squatting while taking a dump. Then we went to Waffle House and gorged on cheese grits. One thing I can say for the South: amazing food.

About armadillos: I have seen armadillos in south Georgia and Florida, so maybe South Carolina might fit in with those. I haven't seen them in north Georgia.
ReplyDeleteAbout mufflers: I have seen plenty of those in the middle of the road, gaters (recaps) too.
About amazing food in the South: Shucks, oh hush!
I love Waffle House! I had never eaten at one before until we went to KY last month.
ReplyDeleteI live in South Carolina and I have never seen an armadillo wondering our roads.Doesn't mean it wasn't one. I guess one could have been hitchhiking through. We have lots of possums- which are basically huge greyish white rats with personality, or what the natives call 'dinner'. Maybe I shouldn't have said that after the remark "amazing food".
ReplyDeleteDr. P and I were actually wondering if we saw the armadillo in S. CA or in GA. Our road trip is blurring together. Based on your comments, I am thinking maybe we saw it in GA.
ReplyDeleteWhen I drove to CA I never ever saw an armadillo that was alive. They were always dead on the side of the road. It's a wonder they are not extinct.
ReplyDeleteThis may sound gross but my body also did not allow me to shit for the entire 5 day trip to CA. I didn't have the chance to experience shitting in public.
When we were driving through KY we saw a goat on some sheer cliffs. We wondered how the hell it got there and then how the hell it was going to get down. We determined that it had to plunge to its death. The cliff was that steep.
I miss a good road trip.
