Did anyone bother watching Bush's State of the Union address last night? I can barely bring myself to think about it. The rancid stench emanating from anything that fool says just turns my stomach.
Speaking of rot and turning stomachs, there are few things that I hate more than wasting food. The fact that fresh veggies go bad so quickly is one of my primary reasons to avoid buying them, or so I tell myself. On Wednesday I bought some chopped bell peppers and forgot to eat most of them until today. They were slightly slimy, but I couldn't bear the thought of throwing them out and wasting $2.49, so I dipped a few in hummus and nibbled away. Husband hates when I do things like this, noting that we can afford higher quality food, but I'm pretty sure they were just on the verge of going bad, so why not eat?
While I slurped down the peppers, I justified my actions by noting that at least I don't serve bad food to guests. The chance of a run-in with something long beyond its expiration date is a real risk when dining with my aunt. When you ask her for some ice to put over the spot where the mold on your bread just punched you in the face, she becomes indignant. "It's fine!" she'll hiss at you. "See? The swelling is going down already."
Sometimes I wonder if I am really my aunt's kid, and she gave me to my parents to raise. My aunt insists that my 20 year old cousin is just like me. This means that I feel sorta bad for the poor kid, as I am quite a spazz, but she's a good writer and a passionate advocate. I hope that I'm like her (or vice versa).

Hi -- never commented before, but wanted to point out that you can use slightly-over-the-hill veggies in soup, stew, or omelets...it's just that the thought of you eating slightly slimy green peppers made me a little ill. :)
ReplyDeleteI guess if I've gone this far, I should let you know that I often forward your posts to my 19-year-old daughter and she's started reading you regularly, too. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for the tip (and the compliment!). I must admit that I didn't feel so well myself last night after eating them. Next time, either I omelet them or just chuck them.
ReplyDeleteThis post just made me hungry for some hummus...
ReplyDeleteNo, I couldn't face the SOTU address. I'm just waiting for November.
ReplyDeleteWhen my grandmother was still alive and getting rather dotty, food safety kind of went by the wayside. I remember going to visit her accompanied by my sister and young niece and being served some kind of chicken dish with raw pieces of chicken in it. My sister and I politely nibbled on our rice and salad, then hightailed it to KFC for an edible dinner and the grocery store to ensure that future meals on the trip wouldn't kill us.
I stopped watching State of the Union addresses some time ago. They are not used as a vehicle to actually inform the public as to the actual state of our Union, but to justify their own political actions. The speeches are full of misinformations used to explain to us why they are screwing us in the arse so royally.
ReplyDeleteI raise my own veggies in the back garden and I raise green (bell) peppers each year. Sometimes they will stay in the frig a bit too long. The good thing about whole green peppers is that bad spots do not affect the entire pepper. Unlike potatoes, you can cut off the bad parts and use the good parts. Therefore, I recommend that you buy whole green peppers instead of diced peppers. If you do buy diced green peppers, you can freeze them and they will work in most dishes after you thaw them. I have several little baggies of green and red peppers that I grew in my garden in my freezer, ready to put on pizzas, or to use in salads, or in stir fries.
Two embarrassing things: 1. I had no idea that you could not just cut out the bad part of a potato; and 2. I buy cut veggies because I am way too lazy to cut them myself. Seriously, when it comes to food prep of any sort, I am extremely lame. I'm learning a lot from you all, though, which is very cool. I love blogging!
ReplyDeletei guess i'll know to turn down any food you offer me, especially peppers, if i do come to your apartment. ha!
ReplyDeletemy grandma got a little lax in baking in her later years too. i never particularly cared for apple pie anyway, but when i found a bunch of seeds & stems... bleah!
Don't be like the king in the Babar book who ate a bad mushroom!
ReplyDeleteThe sound of GW's voice makes me want to punch someone. So I don't listen to him.
ReplyDeleteBuy some of those green Evert fresh http://www.evertfresh.com/
bags. They really, really work and you can use them over and over. It makes it hard to get veg to rot. Weird but true.
My husband calls me a goat. Which it seems I might be. I've only gotten sick once from eating old food. But sorry, I wouldn't eat slimy peppers.
