It Was Smashing

On Friday afternoon, I took the train up to Stamford, CT, where Husband works. He picked me up at the train station in Fred the Red, our PT Cruiser, and we motored up to Massachusetts for our godson's 2nd birthday celebration extravaganza. Since we took off around 2 pm, we beat most of the traffic, and were able to enjoy a delightful evening with my friend Alex, her husband Big Giraffe, and their two kids.

The party was set to begin at 11 am on Sat., so we offered to help out and pick up a few last minute items. First on our list was balloons. Around 9:30, Husband and I headed over to the local party store, parked Fred, and picked out a ginormous Winnie the Pooh mylar balloon and a dozen regular ones. The party store was a bit of a madhouse, so it took a few minutes for them to take our order, and we were told to return around 10:15. We paid and headed out for our next item, which was ice.

When I approached the passenger door of Fred, I thought, "Hmmm... that's odd. Why is there glass all over the front seat?" Just as my brain was slowly processing the message my eyeballs sent in, Husband said, "SHIT! Someone fucking smashed my window and stole the GPS."

Indeed, it was true. Clearly, we would not be bringing the balloons and ice to the party.

Cutting a long story short, we filed a police report and drove Fred to an auto glass repair shop. Fortunately, the good folks there were able to fix Fred that day, and 10 hours later as we drove back to NYC in the pouring rain, we were nice and dry in the car.

  1. yep, it's been all over the news lately...how gps systems are all the rage among criminals and how if you have one that you should take it and it's mounting thingy with you when you leave your car, so they won't be tempted. sorry that happened to you.

  2. Sorry that happened. I'm glad that you were able to make the party though! We loved the balloons!

  3. Sorry to hear about that.

Surely with some minor modifications to the basic design the manufacturers could produce a lock-out system requiring a pin code or something to get it to work.

  4. Arrggh...that sucks! I would've been so mad. But at least they were able to fix your window so quickly!

  5. that so royally sucks.
you're the second blog i regularly read who that has happened to in the last month. in my blog aware post b109 had that happen too. she took down the gps & put it in the glovebox, but left the mount up. thieves rightly assumed that if she was lazy enough to leave up the mount she was too lazy to take the gps out of the car. d@mn!

  6. And see I thought from my 6 years living in the Boston area (Brighton, Brookline, Alston, etc) that NOT getting your window smashed was the rare thing. Any time I left my CD player in the car, and sometimes even when I didn't, my window would get smashed. I'd come outside on a Saturday or Sunday morning, and it would seem that every car on the road was sans at least one window. . . . . Still, they should have left your car alone. Don't they know who you are?

  9. The most random part of this post was when I realized that I had already read Alex's story about the party and the GPS and it was YOU! I just started reading Alex and I had no idea you were friends.

  10. That sucks. I just hate that criminals will cost you hundreds or thousands to get to something that they can sell on the street for maybe $75. It kills me.

  11. Thanks everyone! I guess since we were in the 'burbs we didn't use the same precautions we would if we were in a city. The thing is, the GPS does require a code to use, so it is utterly fucking useless to the thieves since it won't turn on for them.

  14. I guess a benefit to driving an old rusty 1993 Buick is that any thief can tell I have nothing of value worth stealing.

Anything valuable has to be kept out of sight because thieves will use a universal key (hammer) to get inside.

As for that code to use the GPS, it can be hacked and then the GPS resold.
