We love the fact that PETA thought to illustrate the fact that the only thing worse than killing poor little animals to appease the fashion gods is having an unshaved snatch. I guess that makes all of your disciples no better than those people who club little baby seals to death, or eat tuna that is not dolphin friendly. . . . .I am not surprised either that PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) would engage in using such ridiculous image and offensive tag line, as they often do these kind of things. (The most recent issue of Bitch magazine had a very good article on this exact topic.) I have long loathed their sanctimonious asses. They LOVE saving innocent non-human animals from exploitation while sexualizing and exploiting human woman animals, who incidentally, are naturally hairy. Can you imagine them advocating for a sheep in a bikini to be shorn? Nope, that would be an outrage against nature! Glad that us homo sapien ladies have fewer rights than sheep when it comes to a wooly coat.
You may note from the photo that I took the liberty of prying part of the poster from the wall so that the whole text was easily seen in the photo. I am not a fan of PETA. While I am all for having conviction in your beliefs, I am also for having respect for other people’s beliefs, and not doing things as nutty as, say, sending women dressed in lettuce bikinis to conservative Muslim countries to try and endorse the eating of vegetables, or dancing on the graves of people you do not like.

PETA Says: Women Should Be More Like Bald Eagles
My delightful, wonderful, awesome friend Mara, who is 9 months pregnant, braved the Christmas crowds to take a photo of an incredibly offensive poster from my pals at PETA:
Mara said it best in her email to me:

wow. wow. wow.
ReplyDeleteThis is sickening, but I'm not surprised either.
ReplyDeleteThis is disturbing on so many levels that I don't even really know where to start.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking about this with someone. I remember PETA running this when I used to live in NYC. It's seriously disturbing.
ReplyDeleteSurely the most sickening thing is the skinning of live animals for the sake of producing a "fashion statement"? Whilst PETA's methods might be questioned, is it truly right to ignore the REAL issue?
ReplyDeleteohhh stop bitching. its a fucking advertisement so maybe some of the average retarded american would pay attention because it is so controversial. I support PETA no matter what their next ad targets as long as it gets the word that KILLING ANIMALS IS WRONG !
ReplyDeleteno joke the add is offensive, because peeople who don't ignore animal's right to life find it even more offensive to see someone walking down the street made of 100 slaughtered minks. id rather look at that picture all day than look at 100 dead minks.
ReplyDeleteI'm late on this scene, clearly, but what our PETA commenter friends are failing to see is that one worthy cause is being mocked in favor of another. I don't support animal slaughter and I don't support degrading images of women. It would be offensive if they were using gay or ethnic stereotypes to make their point; the reason they use this is because so many people are still SO BLIND to the destructive imagery that women are bombarded with from a very young age. And, believe me, I try to have a sense of humor about all of these things. The poster is in poor taste.
ReplyDeleteWarrior Two, you rock. That was my point in sending the photo to Suzanne.
ReplyDeletePETA supporter, we're going to have to agree to disagree. Whilst I support PETA's right to campaign however they choose to (first ammendment and all that) I don't believe in blindly supporting advertisements that are offensive. As someone who has done outreach around a number of crucial yet sensitive issues (cancer, abortion, etc) I can tell you there are ways to get your point across without being offensive.
I'll take the minority route and say I have no issues with fur coats. I don't want animals inhumanely treated, but varmits must be hunted for our AND their own good. Using the fur from there is better than just throwing it out.
ReplyDeleteIf you don't think hunting is good, try banning hunting and see how many people die because of deer going through their windshields and watch the animals starving to death, which is apparently more human than instant death.
PETA is out of control. It started with great intentions, to stop the inhumane treatment of animals for human gain. Now it is just a matter of how offensive they can get for shock value. I don't believe that most of the big time supporters even care about the animals.
They certainly don't care about humans. I never want my children or husband to be subjected to pictures of barely clad women or men. But it is forced on us all over the place.
If PETA wants to be taken seriously they need to act like mature adults and face the real issues, not make stuff up for shock value. It looks like it is run by a bunch of teenagers who want to be looked at.
