Welcome to the airport in Cedar Rapids, IA. I took this picture standing in front of the terminal (there’s only one) while waiting for my sister’s husband to pick me up. (He was delayed by traffic, a plague even out here when there’s an accident of any sort.)
What struck me about it is that it is possibly the only place I’ve ever flown into or out of that is not surrounded by suburban sprawl, mega-highways, and/or strip malls. (Although there is a strip joint not far away.) As I waited for SH, I stared at the fields (and a power plant’s smokestack in the distance that is just out of the frame of the picture), it is oddly comforting and unnerving at the same time.
This is a nice metaphor for me today.

I hope it is a good day!
ReplyDeleteI remember the Kansas City airport being like this too.
ReplyDeleteYour picture makes me long for the countryside. B.F. and I have been talking about moving to a more rural area for some peace and quiet. City living is not really for me...although I like that there's lots to do and good choices of food.
xox, jane
My favourite airport like that is in New Quay, England, where the airport is in the middle of fields and the plane literally pulls up alongside a terminal that is smaller than the house I lived in growing up. The airport has a snack bar, but there is nothing else within 5-10 miles except a 2-lane road with a 30 mile per hour speed limit.
ReplyDeleteThe Sacramento airport is in the middle of a wheat field.
ReplyDeleteYeah, sounds like the airport in Oklahoma that I flew into. Hardly a memorable moment.
